Tryout FAQs

What is a USSSA All American Games Tryout?

The tryout portion of the USSSA All American Program is used to identify the top level fastpitch athletes in the 9U-14U age division. All tryouts will allow each athlete equal opportunity to showcase their skills in hitting, throwing, fielding, pitching/catching, and athletic testing. Participants will be evaluated on two positions, primary and secondary.

The All American Fastpitch Program will host tryouts throughout six regions of the country. You can tryout at any location in any region – West, Midwest, South, Southeast, Great Lakes, and Northeast.

Who will run the tryout?

The USSSA All American staff will consist of current and former professional players, college coaches, and other high level coaches.

How does the scoring work for the tryout?

The scores are broken down into three different categories: offense (hitting exit speed and hitting evaluation score), defense (overhand velocity and positional evaluation score), and athleticism (20yd and 5-10-5). For categories that are not scored on a 1-5 scale, the computer algorithm uses 9 years’ worth of data to create a 1-5 scale based on age. In each of the three categories, the scores are averaged together to create a score for each category. Then the three category scores are averaged together again to create the Total Grade which is what we select athletes from.

1 would be the lowest level of softball IQ/skill, 3 would be average level, and 5 would be the highest level of softball IQ/skill.

Can athletes attend tryouts outside of their region?

Yes, they may attend a tryout outside of their region! They will represent their hometown at the games.

Can athletes tryout multiple times?

Yes, athletes may participate in multiple tryouts in multiple regions. They will be eligible to make a team in any of the regional tryout locations that they attend. We consider each tryout as an individual event with an individual score. We will not be combining scores from multiple tryout events to create a master score.

What age do I register my athlete for?

By entering the correct birthdate, the participant will automatically be put in the correct age group. For USSSA, age eligibility is determined strictly by birth year. Please visit the following link for the Age Calculator.

No athlete can play up in their age division.

What if my athlete is under the age of 9 or is 15?

Since we do not have a division younger than 9U, any athlete younger than league age 9 will be trying our for the 9U division as be compared to other 9U athletes.

Athletes born in 2009 or earlier have aged out of this event.

Can my whole team attend a tryout?

Yes, the tryout is open to all athletes (9U-14U) however, they will be trying out on an individual basis, not as a whole team.

Team discounts are available. There must be 8 or more athletes attending from a team to receive the team discount. Please email [email protected] for more details on how to register your team.

How long is the tryout?

We anticipate the tryout to last approximately five hours (including registration), providing there isn’t any weather or field issues. This is an approximation. Depending on numbers at the tryout, it could be shorter or longer. If your athlete is a P or C, they will be there the entire time.

It is important to note that this is a tryout and not a camp. There will be times where the athlete is standing around due to the nature of evaluations.

Will there be enough time for my pitcher to warm up? Will there be a catcher?

For the pitching evaluations, we will use a catcher also participating in the tryout to warm up the pitchers. The pitchers and catchers will be evaluated at the same time.

It is the pitcher’s responsibility to be warm and ready when it is their time to perform. If they are not ready, they need to let the evaluator know.

Who will select the athletes for the All American Games?

The National staff from USSSA will select the USSSA All American Teams based on the tryout evaluations. There will be no outside influences when evaluating a participant or in selecting the teams other than the tryout scores themselves. All scores are non-negotiable, the scores that are given by the evaluators will be the scores calculated in the overall evaluation.

How many athletes are selected?

We don’t have a set number of athletes that are selected as we focus on skill level. If the overall level of skill is low, then we will select less athletes and if the overall level of skill is high, then we will select more!

All of the teams are mixed region!
